The Adelie penguin, also known as the Pygoscelis Adeliae, is a very interesting mammal. This Penguin is an Antarctic mammal that has a huge population of 2.5 million breeding pairs.
An Adelie penguin is an Antarctic mammal that lives in the Antarctic waters, the Antarctic islands, the pack ice and the ice floes. There they have adapted to the freezing cold weather.
An Adelie penguin has many movement habits. One way they can move is by sliding but they can also walk, swim and jump. They can jump vertically up to 2 metres from the ocean to the ice and dive up to 1500m. When Adelie Penguins swim faster than usual they can escape predators.
During spring an Adelie penguin will meet with another penguin on the shores of Antarctica to breed. They usually lay 2 eggs each spring.
The Adelie penguin is an amazing animal because of its fur. An Adelie penguin’s fur changes as it matures. Baby Adelie Penguins have black and grey fur that makes it look like it’s wearing a uniform, while the adults have black and white fur that makes the penguin look like its wearing a men dinner suit. An Adelie penguin is also interesting because of its weight. Its weight can be as big as 6kg and its length can be as long as 70cm.
Krill is the Adelie Penguins favourite food along with squid and fish but that’s not all they devour. An Adelie penguin’s diet also consists of amphipods and little crustaceans which builds up strength for them to live and hunt.
An Adelie penguin is a very important animal and was named by Jules Dumont in 1930. It is amazing and an important part of the Eco zone.
