Emperor Penguin
The Emperor Penguin is the largest type of Penguin on Earth. The Emperor Penguin’s scientific name is Aptenodytes Forsteri. It is a flightless bird that is only found in Antarctica.
The Emperor Penguin has black feathers on its back and white feathers on the front. It has triple layers of dense oily feathers. It also has orange stripes on its back and yellow ear spots on its neck. Its black, clawed webbed feet, help it grip onto snow and also has a thickblubber layer under its skin to keep it warm under water and on land. Its height can reach 1.5m and it can weigh 20Kg -40Kg.
The Emperor Penguin is only found in Antarctica. It is found in the Antarctic sea and Antarctica’s coast. It is only found in Antarctica because it does not migrate around the world. They are also found in snowy areas. It lives on the compact sea-ice and ocean.
Many animals rely on Krill for their diet and the Emperor Penguin does as well. The Emperor Penguin eats lots of creatures such as Fish, Shrimp, Krill and other crustaceans. The Emperor Penguin is a secondary consumer in the food chain and its only predator is the Killer Whale.
The Emperor Penguin is an aquatic land animal that lives in water and on land. In water it uses its wings as flippers and its tail for steering and its top speed is 24Kmph. The Emperor Penguin dives in the water 26 times a day and can hold its breath for 2-8 minutes. Although it’s a bird it cannot fly.
The Emperor Penguin only gives birth in little rock nests that they build on land. Female Emperor Penguins lay one single egg during May and June. Female Emperor Penguins give birth during winter months. The male Emperor Penguin sits on the egg and incubates it for 60-70 days .Each year there are 2000 Emperor Penguins breeding.
This Antarctic animal is a unique animal and is a secondary consumer. If we don’t take care of it and kill them it will destroy the Antarctic food chain and we will never see them again.
