Minke Whale
Minke whales are very unique and interesting animals that belong to the baleen whale family. The minke whale (Balaenoptra acutorostrata) is a mammal and is very common to find, about 800,000 minke whales are located world-wide!
Minke whales look very interesting. Their skin can be black or grey and it is smooth with shininess. Their bellies are a white colour. Minke whales have baleen plates instead of teeth. Baleen plates look like cream and white fur which is on the top and the bottom of their mouths. Other baleen whales also have baleen plates. Just like some other animals, females may be larger than males. Minke whales can be as heavy as 9,200kg and about 10m long! Minke whales have fascinating bodies.

Minke whales are aquatic animals, meaning they live in the water. Although many of
them live in the Antarctic water, they can also be found near the Equator, in
northern, warm waters.
A minke whale’s diet consists of: crustaceans, krill, plankton, eels and small group fish such as anchovies, cod and salmon. Minke whales are part of the food web. They are eaten by small toothed whales, like orcas. Minke whales are currently being hunted for their meat, blubber and for scientific
research. If minke whales are disappearing, the food web could be easily disrupted.
